The following is a letter I recently received from a student. It is these moments as a teacher - which are few and far between - that make it all worth it. It brought tears to my eyes.
As you have most likely come to realise I am considerably better at writing than I am at actually speaking so this seemed like the best way to thank you for the pleasure of being your student. Although my incessant chatter and annoying tendency for getting distracted may not have fully displayed my gratitude and made your job that little bit harder, I really appreciate all you have done this year and I am very thankful you came to our school. You are without a doubt the best teacher I have ever had, you even somehow made English class enjoyable, which is no easy feat and something no other teacher has been successful in doing. I actually looked forward to your lessons. So basically, considering you are leaving at the end of this year I really hope you have a great life and as our lives both proceed, just know I will always remember you as the one teacher who was finally able to ignite my will to do better than I thought possible and who has inspired me in more ways than one, even if you weren't aware of it.

Wow, Shan. You must hang onto that. You're absolutely right, it makes it all worth it...most days. You can read this letter again when you're having one of those days that you feel it is not.
xo
That is awesome Shan. You should be so proud of the positive impact you have on the youth of today. It takes only one person to make a difference and set the direction in the future life of someone so young.
love Tanya
