Exam Marking

It's that time of the year again.  My life and my family's life comes to a crashing halt as I work overtime correcting Year 12 English papers at VCAA in Coburg.

As always, I'm shocked with the low literacy levels of 17+ year old students.  How is it that they get that far in their education?  Or, that they get that far without being aware of their errors?  Some of them are the most simplest of errors.  Perhaps it's my middle class snobbery to make that comment?  Or, my perfection for the English language?

'Look Both Ways'

'He came out a divorce with his ex-wife.'
'Now, I know what you're thinking (my handwriting has telepathic abilities, I know, surprised me too).'
'His head turns into an analytical and medical whirl of thoughts.'
'Nick has dealt with his late father's death from cancer, and he isn't copping with it.'

'Year of Wonders'

'Elinor and Anna work together attempting to create a remedy or poison to cure the disease.'

'A Man for all Seasons'

'Sir Thomas More sounds like a pretty top bloke.'

As for the spelling mistakes:
  • knowbody
  • villiage
  • villiagers
  • victems
  • alow
  • appart
  • colaps (collapse)
  • curcid (cursed)
  • humaris
  • mentall
  • trys
  • sentance
  • appale (appeal)
  • enought
One 'amusing' student left his mobile number under a handwritten picture of hairy balls with an erect oversized penis.  Thanks for the $2.20 to mark your exam - wanker!

And to finish it off, out of the 1000 papers that I marked one student left this final comment in red: 'V. appreciative of the time you have taken to mark.'  I gave him a 9/10!

Makes me shudder! I don't think any kids in my grade 3/4 class would make those spelling errors... which makes me wonder...
Are these kids ones that slipped through the cracks at primary school? Or, did they once have the skills, then lose them somewhere through the middle years?
What do you think Shan?

Hi Ally,

Thanks for leaving a comment from one fellow teacher to another. I agree with both your statements - slipped through the cracks and/or lost their skills along the way. If I had to be brutally honest, the standard overall is below average in Victoria. What is going on? Shan xo
