February's Book - 'The Lost Art of Sleep' by Michael McGirr

The book, 'The Lost Art of Sleep' by Michael McGirr, melded nicely into my 34 List goals to stay awake til 10.30pm for one month, and join a book group. I'll start with the latter ... I joined the Yarraville Sun Theatre book group with my friend, Brooke, and the book for the month of February happened to be the above one. At the meeting, we even got to meet the author (aka Geoffrey Rush!) and talked to him about his book and his life.

Coincidentally, I had just finished my one month of 10.30pm shut eye and was up for discussion about the lost art of sleep - or the art of lost sleep!  I'm very good at having little sleep.  My tricks of the trade include: not looking at the time when I go to sleep; having no visible clock in my bedroom; never counting how many hours of sleep I think I may have had; and having a hot shower every night before I go to bed.  I've become better at since becoming a mum.

Other interesting comments that came up during our book discussion with the author included:

* God made night first, then day.  He created the seventh day for rest.  Why do we shop, continue to rush around, and clean our houses on this day?

* Tiredness can be the enemy of rest.  We live in a world that is often too tired to sleep.

* If you fall asleep in less than 10 minutes, it's a sign of sleep deprivation.  I timed my husband one night - 4 minutes!  He doesn't deal well with lack of sleep.

All in all, an okay read - the author was a better story teller in real life.  All in all, enjoying the book group and meeting some new people in my new area.  All in all, I'm continuing to learn more and more about living with less sleep.
