Happy Birthday Luke!

In late September, Luke and I, and good friends Rod and Edith (below), celebrated Luke's 33rd birthday.  The night was all planned and plotted so that Luke had no idea what he had in store for him.  And of course, it was our first night away from Amaya - thanks to the babysitting services of my parents.  Over the course of Amaya's first year, we have both stayed away, but separately.  I have stayed over at girlfriends' houses (due to big nights!) and Luke at his parents' house.  But never have we stayed over night, somewhere else, together, since Amaya has been born.  It was bound to be a new and exciting experience.  Afterall, as parents it's always important, and vital, to get back to the core of your relationship and spend some time together, away from children.

And so, we ventured onto Melbourne's Colonial Tramcar Restaurant ...

Trams are such a huge part of Melbourne.  The first tram ran in Richmond in 1885.  By 1891 there were 41 miles of cable lines around Melbourne.    Today, there are 135 miles of double track carrying a large volume of trams to all points around Melbourne's inner suburbs.  The beauty of the tram as a mode of transportation is that it is pollution-free.

The Tramcar Restaurant officially commenced operation as you see it today (picture above) in August 1983.  On our night, the Tramcar left from the Casino at 5.30pm.  The ride took us down to Middle Park and St Kilda - and somehow we ended back where we started.  I guess by this time I had had my glass refilled with champagne several times!  The meals were delicious and expertly prepared and presented, considering the chefs and waiters had so little working space on the tram.

And of course, the company cannot go ignored.  Rod and Luke met one another whilst they were studying at the Academy, and have remained friends since (14 years!).  Edith is Rod's wife and a lover of cats - much like Luke and myself.  Edith and I have become friends through Rod and Luke's friendship - it's always nice, and much easier, when couples get along.  And the great thing about Edith ... she loves a good glass of wine, just like me.

The night was a success and we felt like tourists in our home town.
