The Finger

Although Amaya physically looks A LOT like Luke, there is no doubting that she has my personality.  She is loud, social, chatty, stubborn, demanding, bossy and loves to organise things.  Her latest act of authority is 'the finger'.  As you can see in the picture above, 'the finger' is straight, direct and firm.  I noticed recently that when another child came to play with the same toy Amaya was playing with, out came the finger and a loud exclamation from Amaya's mouth.  The child quickly crawled away.  'The finger' is also used to point at animals, her dummy, her drink, sounds, television, photographs, food and anything else that gets in the path of her command.

I often mention to Luke how sorry I feel for him to be bombarded with strong and bossy women.  Luke is so quiet, passive and gentle.  The complete opposite to what he married and what he has created.  Luke's response is to laugh ... but not having had any sisters, he has no idea what is in store for him once Amaya hits the teenage years.  'The finger' will still reign supreme and commands will still be given, it'll just be done in a different fashion.

AAhhhh, the special finger! This act of pointing has just taken on a whole new meaning. We now know something is worth paying attention to if it gets pointed at.

My son walkes around all day pointing, just as Amaya shows she does. It must be a toddler's special way of communicating the importance of a particular object, action or person.

Shan, you are so right in saying that if our little ones can convey such enthusiasm and determination with the pointing of one little finger, imagine what force they will use as a teenager? On second thought, maybe I don't want to think about it.....
